Lady Magic And The Green Knight

(A Story About Taking Over The World -- Again)

Lady Magic plays the harp and tends to beauty in her rhythmic way.

11182007_04

In another part of the forest Shell and Greyhorn SilverAntler reach Yeasta’s misty-swirl candle.  Yeasta (in case you don’t know) is God, the Ruler Supreme of The Universe.   Shell and Greyhorn pause to study the words on the candle.

“‘The world must be saved’,” reads Shell.  “And: ‘There’s only one person to do it’.”

“Who?” Shell wonders.  “And from what?”

“I have no idea,” replies Greyhorn.  “But we may find out all too soon.”

Santa races in, riding on the magical cat Spook.  “So here’s where you disappeared to!”

11182007_13

Santa’s sister Annie rides in as well.  “Hurrah, there you are Shell and Greyhorn!”

11182007_12

“Eek!” squeals Annie.  Emerging from the Green Chapel is a green garbed knight …. With a vicious laugh he calls out:  “Enter, and lose your head to my axe!”

11182007_15

Santa, Spook, Shell, and Greyhorn SilverAntler race to Annie.  “Who is this fiend?” shouts Santa.

11182007_09

Annie topples over in her fright.

“You are right to fear me,” roars the Green Knight.  “I serve Lady Magic, Queen of the Forest.  You have crossed into her domain, and for that, one of you must lose her head!”

“My oh my,” a quiet voice says.  “How things have mixed themselves up.”

11182007_18

Lady Magic calls the Green Knight to her.  He has no choice but to obey.

11182007_19

He kneels before her, with a candle almost burning off his toes.

11182007_21

Lord Golden Owl appears in the Green Chapel.  “Hm.  So what has that knight gotten himself into this time?”

11182007_20

“What indeed,” Lady Magic murmurs as she regards the Green Knight.

11182007_23

“Green Knight, you are going to have your own head chopped off,” says Lady Magic as she casts a spell.

11182007_25

All is transformed!  The Green Mask has vanished and a head is gone … No, it is firmly attached where it should be.   A young man kneels before Lady Magic.  He is Govan–Shell’s brother, and Santa and Annie’s cousin!   Lady Magic has released him from a dark spell.

11182007_24

Santa, Shell, and Annie gaze in amazement at the Green Knight’s transformation … into plain old Govan!  The last bits of darkness creep over them before vanishing forever.

11182007_26

Allyson the Fairy, herald to Lady Magic, enters the clearing.  “All is well,” she calls.  “Govan is freed and the world is saved!”

11182007_27

“Very fine,” says Lord Golden Owl.  “Very fine.”

11182007_11

Elsewhere the Green Knight’s head floats down the stream with the last trace of evil.

NOTES ON THE STORY:  The characters are from a mingling of family mythos–some from the children’s magical nature novel I’m writing, and other ideas from my daughters’ own mythic play landscape.  It’s a bit dreamy … who is the Hero in this tale?  Who or what is the Shadow?  And how are both the reflections of my nature?    Where do I find myself in the story right now?  Where do YOU find yourself in this tale … if anywhere?   And was the Green Knight’s head truly chopped off somehow?  As Lord Golden Owl said above: Hm!

Late Winter Fantasy

Fog has submerged the world.  The chickens gaze out into the mist, while Chief Rooster protects the hens.  Silence surrounds them.

01192009_01

Chief Rooster wonders about the silence and the flock.  Very dramatic!

01192009_02

The horses are still and silent as well.

01192009_031

In the barn, two chickens roost.

Meanwhile, as morning begins on the prairie, Trillium and Blue Water come upon a house.   Trillium imagines that the boat she’s in could sail away across the grasses into the fog!  Blue Water settles into cottage-keeping, not noticing the two dogs asleep on the floor.

01202009_01

“Land ho!” Trillium cries.

01202009_02

On Hencock Mountain, their fairy friend Hana waves back.  Hana doesn’t notice the cat and dog in this cottage!

01202009_031

Angora and Shep peer out into the foggy morning.  “Was someone just here?”

01202009_04

Saffron peeks out too.  “Skunk, I think I see people.  I wonder who they are and how they got here.  Few people find their way to Hencock Valley.”

“Odd,” is Skunk’s reply.

01202009_05

Coco looks out.  “I see flattened grass, but not much else.  I wonder how the grass got flattened.  Wind?”

“I’m not sure,” Skittles says.  “Perhaps it’s giants.”

01202009_06

Skittles looks out on the prairie.  No sign of giants.  And yet–something is out there.  He’s sure of it.

01202009_07

Animals and houses wake up.  Barely any notice who is actually out there.  But Skittles does.

01202009_08

Dahlia Rose watches the houses waking up to the morning, not knowing what Hencock Valley will say about Blue Water, Trillium, and Hana breaking into houses!

leafriseJane and Gwynne (Jane’s daughter, age 7) wrote the story together.  Trillium and Blue Water were made by Jennifer Newell of Vashon Island, WA. Jane made Hana. Dahlia Rose was created by Lisa Mathias.
